History of Bharat Ratna and Padma Awards

In 1954, The Government of India instituted two civilian awards (01) The Bharat Ratna & (02) The Padma Vibhushan. in 1955, The Padma Vibhushan was reclassified into three classes namely Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg and Tisra Varg. later, these renamed as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

The Bharat Ratna

Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the country. Government has conferred Bharat Ratna Award on 45 persons till date but none of these from Chhattisgarh.

  • The recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President of India.
  • The number of Bharat Ratna Awards is restricted to a maximum of three in a particular year.
The Padma Awards

The Padma Awards are announced annually on Republic Day. The Padma Awards are conferred on the recommendations made by the Padma Awards Committee, which is constituted by Prime Minister every year.

  • The nomination process is open to the public, even self-nomination can be made.
  • The award is given in three categories, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
  • in Chhattisgarh, there is total 28 Padma Awardees in which 01 Padma Vibhushan, 01 Padma Bhushan and 26 Padma Sri person has conferred till date.
